i received 1 message after the update, none have been retrieved since. the account settings are unchanged. it tries to receive, saying it's connecting to the server, then just stops without retrieving any messages.

Thunderbird has been working fine with this email address for a year, with the same settings until after this upgrade/

I found info on another question thread , and go to an error log:

Timestamp: 2016-01-12 7:30:01 PM Error: An error occurred executing the cmd_getNewMessages command: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8055000a [nsIMsgIncomingServer.getNewMessages]" nsresult: "0x8055000a (<unknown>)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js :: GetNewMsgs :: line 2719" data: no] Source File: chrome://global/content/globalOverlay.js Line: 99

but that doesn't tell me how to fix it

I'm no computer expert. We use thunderbird because it's been easy and reliable for over 3 years. It is now proving otherwise.

Try disabling your anti virus email scanner. (that might require a reboot. ) Usually it is the anti virus if the status part says getting mail but none actually arrive.
