Did you issue firefoxpatch or have I compromised my browser?

A window opened saying it was a Firefox security scan and opened a window to download FirefoxPatch.exe which supposedly fixed a problem. Is this legit or do I have a problem if I run it. How would I recover?

It is 100% FAKE

If you downloaded this .exe and yet to install it, do not install it as it can install the nasty CryptoLocker trojan which can lock files on Windows and is hard to remove.

Firefox updates are done internally in Firefox (by way of a .mar file) and by download from www.mozilla.org and www.mozilla.org/firefox/all and Mozilla does not host updates outside of *.mozilla.org sites.

There are no .exe patch updates since Firefox is not just for Windows but also Mac OSX and Linux.

This fake patch scam has been around for a couple months now and it popups on some sites is preying on inexperienced Firefox and or Windows users to get them to install a trojan.

. Whenever you get a message / popup that software / files need to be updated;

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE PROVIDED LINKS

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Any time you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the web site of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to Mozilla.org. {web link}

You can report such a site at; Google Report Phishing Page {web link} which is the same when done while on site by going to Help > Report Web Forgery

Help us safeguard Mozilla’s trademarks by reporting misuse {web link}

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
