Using Refdesk.com as homepage. It no longer auto updates. Happened before (2 years) and reset to get auto updates. Now setting is turned off... can't find switch.

Was it being done using an add-on?

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.
