save emails as text or doc files that can be opened by other programs, like word or generic doc program.
Hi, I am attempting to save important legal emails as a text or document file that can be opened by word or a generic document program because the attorneys do not have firefox. Any help appreciated thank you

The built in capability you could use is to save email messages as HTML. File|Save As... and you need to select HTML as the file type. These will open in a browser, or even a word processor. But they can be complicated to transport since there is often an ancillary folder for embedded images.
I would hope that if you save messages in the native eml format, your lawyer's email client ought to be able to open them.
In either case, the ImportExportTools add-on may make life easier if you need to save a large number of messages.
I think a safer option for you would be to print them to PDF. If your OS doesn't have this built in, there are various free PDF writers available. My own experience with lawyers is that they seem to like the PDF format, so they are likely to have a PDF viewer. And of course Windows has had PDF viewing and creating capabilities built in since Windows 7.
