Updated from Thunderbird 38.2 to 38.3. Thunderbird 38.3 won't open the inboxes for the accounts that were in Thunderbird 38.2. Uninstalled Thunderbird 38.3, and re-downloaded and reinstalled from the Thunderbird website. Re-created email accounts (Gmail and Hotmail imap). Thunderbird 38.3 still will not open them.

Uninstalled Thunderbird 38.3 and reinstalled Thunderbird 38.2 from the ftp site. Re-created email accounts, Thunderbird 38.2 opened them. Received message that Lightning 4.0.3 was not compatible with Thunderbird 38.2, re-downloaded Lightning 4.0.2.1 and installed it.

Through out all of this neither Thunderbird or Windows gave me any error messages. Thunderbird 38.3 just would not open any mail account. It created them, and I could see the account settings, but I could not see any emails, contacts, calendar info, It's like Thunderbird 38.3 was open but doing nothing. Currently have Thunderbird 38.2 running, with no lost data, and updates turned off.

Chosen solution

Sounds like what some other users are seeing

1. open tools | addons | extensions and remove Lightning/calendar addon 1a. if you can't get to addons, then start thunderbird in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode and try again) 1b. if you still can't get to addons, reinstall thunderbird from http://getthunderbird.com/ 2. restart thunderbird 3. reinstall Lightning/calendar addon - if you need the functionality

Please tell us, does that help?

I'm also having problems with my TB 38.3 (see description down below), wondering: a) if this Chosen Solution would apply to me, AND if so, b) will removing/reinstalling Lightning will cause any/all of my several Lightning Calendars' worth of data to be lost, corrupted or unusable.

Can anyone answer those 2 questions?

Now for my info and symptoms......

OS 10.7.5 TB 38.3.0 Lightning 4.0.3.1

Yesterday all was well. Then last night, I Quit TB, closed MacBookPro, it slept overnight. Today, I opened MBP, launched TB, and this time, suddenly, no more calendar or calendar tab showing up.

  • View > Calendar: Calendar is greyed out.
  • Events & Tasks > Calendar: DOES open a Calendar tab, but no calendar shows, except the mention of only ONE of my several calendars in the left-hand sidebar.

If I Ctrl- or right- click that calendar mention in left-hand sidebar, then click Properties or Show All Calendars, then nothing happens from either of those.

  • I CAN export any/all calendars to .html, .ics and .csv, via Left/Ctrl-clicking OPEN white space in left-hand sidebar, then clicking Export Calendar, at which point is lets me choose any of my several calendars from which to Export.

What to do!?

Thanks! Ted

Most likely. Trying it will no make it worse.

Thunderbird stores data and program in two different places. Removing components, or even the entire program does not affect the profile folder with your data and settings.

There was a problem with the update to 38.3 which mangled a file for some installs. Which were affected and why them is still not understood. What occurred is. The fix in the thread is for that specific bug.

I succeeded eventually in updating 38.2 to 38.4. At first I let the reinstall simply disable Lightning like it wanted because it said it wasn't compatible but I got the same problem as others of can't access the IN boxes. I had to actually REMOVE Lightning for the update to be successful.
