Regardless if I select New Window from the file menu; do a Control-N; or select Open Link in a New Window when I right-click on a link, nothing happens. I can open a New Tab without any issues, but not a New Window. I'm running Windows Vista 32-bit.

I believe this starting happening after version 16 which was several years ago....back then, I just stop using Firefox. However, I would like to start using Firefox as my primary browser and would like to be able to open new windows instead of new tabs. Please advise.

Chosen solution

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Make sure that your security software isn't blocking the new window.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

Thank you for response....I tried the various checks you mentioned and it appears the 3 of the 4 extensions related to my anti-virus/security software is preventing the New Window action to occur. I guess I'll have to contact them to see if they have a fix for this issue.
