This is a common situation and I've seen many others asking a similar question. It's a simple issue, but Thunderbird does not seem to allow it. In my case, I have a choice of two out-going mail servers. I can use my Web-hosting company, Godaddy, or my Internet provider, the local cable company Charter. By default, Tbird uses the same server for incoming and outgoing mail, if possible, so my mail account was set up to use the Godaddy server for outgoing. I'd prefer, though, to use the local Charter SMTP server. But I can find no way to change to that in Tbird. I could do it in Outlook Express, because both servers are listed for each e-mail account and can be edited. In Tbird, there's a drop-down list for choosing an outgoing server, with no way to simply type in a new server. Or am I missing something? I think not, because others report the same problem. In fact, I have vague memories that some time back, Tbird would let you specify all the server settings for an e-mail account, and then test their validity before finishing - a manual versus automatic way to set up an account. The bottom line is that I would like to revise the outgoing server to whatever I want, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do that.
