Thunderbird has suddenly started losing my new e-mails. It shows they are downloaded, but I cannot find them anywhere.

Thunderbird has suddenly started losing my new e-mails when I download them. They show to be downloaded, but do not show up in my inbox.

Where are they going?

I made no changes to my settings. I have re-booted the computer three or four times with no change.

Do you have anything set to show only Unread messages?

Some candidates are:

View|Folders|Unread QuickFilter Bar Mail Views

If QuickFilter is set to show, say, only messages with attachments, then that might also hide most messages.
