I just upgraded Thunderbird to 38.1.0 and noticed it now includes the LIghtning add-on.

Before I consider it as an alternative to Outlook, does it sync with Android, and through USB?

There's no built in sync capability. I use WiFi and the Internet and Google Calendar (and Google Contacts). Your Android device may come with PC software that lets you synch, but such programs rarely recognize Thunderbird.

You could try this: http://www.birdiesync.com/

I have never used it myself so you'll have to decide for yourself if it looks promising.
