Can't add event. Can't see calendar.
I haven't been able to use lightning for a while. Most of my calendars have disappeared and I cannot make more. The buttons to create them and events are dimmed. I cannot even view the calendar that it says I still have. Seems like every few update cycles something else is missing instead of the fix that I was hoping for.
Chosen solution
I killed lightning again but this time I installed from file. 1. Now I CAN access the calendar! So somehow something solved that. 2. However, the flickering has started again.
It seems that installing from the file causes the flickering!?
Anyway, the calendar is there and maybe the calendar will be useful, but I don't think it would be very usable if I get an epileptic seizure. Not that I've ever had one--but this problem makes me feel like I"m getting dizzy.
Should I mark this as "solved" and open a new thread on the flickering?

Troubleshooting information shows the correct version of Lightning is installed, and Lightning is enabled. What kind of calendar do you have - local or network? If network, is it a Google Calendar? If Google, how do you access it - via the Provider add-on or CalDAV?
Thank you for your time.
I had several calendars that I made in Lightning on Thunderbird over the years. Only one was left -- timeblocks. I also pointed one to google but that also was one that disappeared and it was low priority anyway. I have no idea how I set it up now.
I just have that one calendar left and I exported that for a backup just in case.
What exactly is your question? Please be specific.
It would take several pages to write. Lightning doesn't work. Most of my calendars have disappeared and I cannot make more. The buttons to create them and events are dimmed. I cannot even view the calendar that it says I still have. I could go on and on with specifics. Here is one specific. I right click on the calendar list to add another calendar. I get a context menu that has everything dimmed out except for "export calendar". How do I click "New Calendar" when that menu item is inactive? It should be active. Why isn't it active?
In order to add a new calendar: From the main menu bar: File (Alt-F) - New - Calendar
Same problem. That menu item is dimmed.
Try to uninstall Lightning via Add-on manager. Then download it again from AMO and follow the installation instructions. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/lightning/
Thank you for continuing to try... :-)
I had already done that, but to be on the safe side, I did it again. I uninstalled, restarted Thunderbird, reinstalled, and restarted.
Happily, I didn't lose my last calendar. :-)
However, I still cannot see the calendar; I cannot add events; I cannot add tasks because nearly all the menu items are inactivated.
Lightning came up with the one old calendar, btw.
I just tried to delete that last calendar (I'm pretty desperate!) and it will not delete.
Oh, yikes. It is even worse now. I don't have my tasks in the Today's Pane from that one last calendar. The task tab screen constantly flickers, too. The calendar tab used to have dimmed out tabs for daily, weekly, etc. but now it doesn't. This tab also is now flickering. The flickering shows the column headers appearing and disappearing...
The problem with the two tabs (calendar and tasks) seems to be that the columns are trying to expand to something big. When I change the width of thunderbird to the width of both monitors, I see the Today's pane (and/or the calendar size tabs) half the time. During that time the columns seem to be trying to take up all the screen space. In the next half of the flicker, the first column seems to have won the battle for space. Hard to say, it's flickering badly.
Try to disable hardware acceleration. Tools - Options - Advanced - General tab Uncheck 'Use hardware acceleration'.
Kind of helps, maybe. At least it seems to slow down enough to allow me to shrink some of the columns. Now I can see that the tab is shifting back and forth from one set of columns to some other set in both the calendar tab and the task tab. The mail tab is still stable. (OTOH, I've been using gmail directly since giving up on this, so that isn't much of a plus. I want my appointments!)
So things are worse than this morning.
I don't think I can follow you with the 'flickering' problem, and I don't think this is related to Thunderbird. I'd therefore suggest you sort out the display problems first. This rather sounds like a problem with your graphics adapter/driver.
I also don't really understand what you're trying to achieve. You first did complain about calendars disappearing, and now you're desperate to delete the last remaining one.
After sorting out the display issue, you may simply start with a new profile.
I'm merely trying to delete the calendar because that is the only menu item that is left for me to use. It doesn't work, though. The flickering shows only on calendar and task tabs in thunderbird. The mail tab doesn't even have that problem. So I'm guessing, like you, that it isn't a problem with thunderbird, but with lightning. What am I trying to achieve? I'm trying to get Lightning to work. I'm trying to add an event. I'm trying to add a task. The menu items for these are dim and inactive. The flickering problem just started after I followed your suggestion. I'm not blaming you, but that is when it started. OTOH, that was also just after a new version of Thunderbird.
I think this needs a more radical approach.
Please check in the troubleshooting information for your product version as you had an update. What is it? I am assuming 31.0.7
As your desperate enough to be trying to delete your last calendar (which must be local as remote calendars have no delete option) I suggest radical surgery to remove everything calendar/Tasks/lightning related and start again.
First uninstall lightning from the add-on manager. Then and only then go to the troubleshooting information. Click the show folder button. Close Thunderbird. Rename the folder "calendar-data" to something like oldcalendardata restart Thunderbird. Reinstall lightning and create a local calendar.
Do you still have issues?
Product version is 38.0.1
Followed instructions until after "Reinstall lightning". At this stage I was back to the problem. That is, the last calendar, "timeblock" was still there, and "flickering" was still there. OTOH, my event and task menu items in the File submenu are no longer dim. Checking the folder, I found a new "calendar-data" folder. On the calendar tab, I clicked the "Today" button. Nothing happens that I can see, probably because the logical tab display (as opposed to the viewable one) is extended over both of my monitors. Rechecking the event and task menu items in the File submenu, I find them dim again.
I think we are going in the right direction, though. Thank you, Matt.
Place Thunderbird on a single monitor. Just to check this is not some graphics weirdness.
NowI am going to get you to repeat the last process. but when you delete the calendar-data folder. Copy the file prefs.js to a safe backup location. (this is the heart of Thunderbird's settings, one misstep and your toast. Hence the need for a backup.) Check the task manager that there is no Thunderbird process running, as the file is written when Thunderbird exists normally. So it is vital that there be no existing process. Open the file in notepad. and delete and prefs containing the word calendar. Save your changes and then reinstall.
That is about as radical as such surgery can get. The only thing I can think of after that is to do it in Windows safe mode.
I include two prefs entries as examples so you will know what sort of thing to be looking for, but there will be many entries.
user_pref("calendar.event.defaultlength", 15);
"calendar.event.defaultlength" is the preference 15 is the value
user_pref("calendar.google.migrate", false);
