I'm trying to insert a link into an email using Thunderbird, but I see no "insert" menu.

G'day!

I'm using Thunderbird 31.7.0 with Windows 8. I tried googling instructions, but everything I could find instructed me to use an "insert" menu that my best efforts have been unable to uncover. How can I make text into a link?

Thanks for your time.

I think you may be composing in plain text mode, where the Insert option is not available, nor appropriate. Plain text messages cannot support decorations. Pictures must be sent as attachments.

Hold down shift when clicking Write or Reply, and the message should open in HTML mode, and you will have additional menu options and a formatting toolbar.

The selection of HTML as the default composition mode can be selected in Account Settings for the account, under Composition & Addressing.

Nonetheless, in plain text mode, you can just type in (or better, copy and paste) URLs and email addresses, and in the vast majority of cases, the recipient's email client will render these as active links.

Note that regardless of whether you use plain text or HTML mode when composing, Thunderbird will not offer you active links in the Composition window. If you want to see the link as it would appear to your recipient, you need to save the message as a Draft and view it in the Drafts folder, or send a copy to yourself.

right click the compose toolbar and select menu bar.

To clarify - I have the menu toolbar. It contains these options: File, Edit, View, Options, Enigmail, Tools, Help. I've been unable to find an option for a link under any of these headings.

Thanks a lot! That worked a treat.
