Updating from 31.7.0 to 38.0.1
I'm running Thunderbird 31.7.0. My Avast tells me that there's an update - 38.0.1 but the "Check for Updates" in 31.7.0 doesn't recognise that.
I downloaded 38.0.1 but when I ran it there was no option to "update existing installation", and when I told it where that was, it said I don't have permission to write to that location anyway.
What am I doing wrong?
Chosen solution
This evening around 10pm, the update appeared in Thunderbird 31.7.0 and worked with no more ado.
I had to reset some of my preferences, which took all of a minute.
Obviously new releases take a day or two to filter down to the UK-English users. Avast probably checks somewhere different. I'll turn that option off.

and when I told it where that was
I'm not sure what that means. In any case, you do need Administrator permissions to install Thunderbird. Typically you'd get a UAC prompt. I'd simply wait until the automatic and manual (Help > About Thunderbird) updates will be enabled.

I'd read that. It didn't help.
The 38.0.1 I downloaded wanted to install in a different location to where Thunderbird is located on my PC, so I told it the correct location.
I was running it as Administrator. I'd been prompted to update, albeit by Avast rather than by Thunderbird itself.
It works, so for the moment I'll wait and see if Thunderbird itself prompts for the update at some future date.
It would be extremely helpful if Mozilla would have a page on which the prior versions of a product line were listed. I discovered by a website post that 38.0.1 was released today. I checked my Thunderbird version and discovered that I only had 31.7.0 installed.
I then started wondering if my Thunderbird was way the heck out of date. I went to the download page https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/ and there is not one mention of what the prior versions of Thunderbird were!
This site gives a good overview. Unfortunately 31.7.0 is missing there. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/releases/
In any case, even if it doesn't sound very logic, 38.0.1 comes after 31.7.0.

Thanks for the link. yes I realize 38.0.1 comes after 31.7.0 but there is also a 7 point difference between the two versions.
I have seen Thunderbird in the past get stuck at old release version of the product. Which is why I wondered if that had happened with me with 31.7.0.
Seems Mozilla only links to the above page on the download page for US version of Thunderbird https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/thunderbird
On the Great Britain download page of Thunderbird https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/ it simply links directly to the release notes of the current version of Thunderbird.
