Why cant I double-click on the top of the window to minimize anymore?
I just updated to Firefox 38.0.1 and have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can answer for me:
1) Why cant I double-click on the top of the browser window to minimize anymore?
2) In Preferences, why cant I get to anything but the "General" tab?
Thanks, in advance, for any help you might be able to lend!
Sincerely (Sincerly frustrated, that is)
EF

Hi Eric:
(1) On Windows... double-clicking the window title bar switches between maximized and resizable. On Mac, hmm, I actually do not know, sorry.
(2) The new "in-tab" preferences dialog might be affected by one of your add-ons, or maybe an incompatibility with your display driver software. Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.
If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option key when starting Firefox.
If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart.
Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).
Any improvement?
If you are too frustrated for further troubleshooting of the Preferences page, you can switch back to the old dialog for now. This is how:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste pref and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.preferences.inContent preference to switch it from true to false
(Note: I don't know whether the old dialog will be in Firefox forever or is a transitional feature. As you've probably noticed, the long-term trend is to remove things that pop up.)

Thanks jscher2000!
Your "about:config" advice helped me solve the issue with me not being able to navigate around my Firefox preferences. Way cool and thanks again!
Regarding not being to minimize the browser window: I am on a Mac and have since learned about a keyboard shortcut ("Apple M") that will minimize the window. However having the ability to do it by double-clicking on the top of the window is (was) a function that was so handy and I have no clue as to why they would take such a useful option out of the mix.
If anyone else has any suggestions about how to re-enable this function in Firefox 38.0.1 I would be most grateful!

Modified
See:
Not only have we streamlined their look, but we’ve also updated their functions. Close, minimize, and maximize are now close, minimize, and full screen, eliminating the extra full‑screen control and consolidating the window controls in one place.
- Hold down the Options key to make the button switch between full screen mode and maximize.
- Double-click the title bar: the default behavior is to maximize.
