Up till now I have been using Eudora and each time after checking for new E-mails the program would shut down the link to the Web. Now I have to manually do it each and every time I check for E-mail and then click a box saying yes I want to go back online to check for new E-mails. I am one of those people that does not want to stay connect to the web all the time that I have my computer turned on during the day.

If your computer has internet connectivity then Thunderbird will auto connect to internet on startup and remain in that state until interent connectivity is lost or if you choose to go offline.

However, you can set the state to startup in: Tools > Options > Advanced > Network & Disc Space Offline - click on Offline button. Choose startup settings etc and click on OK. Click on OK to save settings.

Go 'Offline quickly: Click on the 2 blue screen icon located bottom far left in Status bar.

Go 'Online quickly: Click on the 2 black screen icon located bottom far left in Status bar.
