Music plays when I open Firefox browser

Whenever I open Firefox browser music begins playing. I have also sometimes heard non-musical audio, what sounds like a commercial.

I checked the add-ons/plug-ins list of Firefox and nothing on it seems to be the source of this problem.

I also already checked the installed programs from my computer's Control Panel. But there is nothing installed recently that would explain this unwanted audio playing upon opening Firefox.

And this unwanted audio only plays in Firefox, not when I use Internet Explorer browser. But I prefer Firefox overall, so hope I may find a remedy to this situation.

I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, but the problem will not go away using that measure either.

And when I have tried a System Restore of my hard drive the earliest date is this morning, which does no good as this problem was also there yesterday.

My Operating System is Windows 7 64-bit. I am using an HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook PC.

Please advise on what is a solution to this issue.

I think there is a program installed in your PC which starts to play music or commercial audios when you are connected to internet. You should check your installed programs to find that. Moreover, you can use an antivirus protection to find any irritating programs like that.

You can check the home page setting:

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Thank you for all this information. And I shall save it for future reference, in case I might need it for another situation. But I was finally able to get the audio to stop playing (whenever I opened Firefox) by instituting that simple "Refresh Firefox" solution.

What somehow happened was a You Tube page was playing audio without showing as an open tab in Firefox. If anyone may explain how and/or why this would have happened, I am curious to know such, especially if something I may have inadvertently caused, or if attributable to some malware or virus.

Perchance, were you using a Video Downloader add-on? Maybe a video got "stuck" in the download cache and was replaying when Firefox was opened.

I am aware of the video downloader factor. I suppose it is possible what you state could have happened. But I have no way of proving that was the cause of my particular problem. In any case, the "Refresh Firefox" solution resolved the problem.

Now, how do I close this case, so no one else will think I still have this problem. I couldn't find a means to "close case," so just stated so in my comments here.
