Why can't I change my outgoing server name?
Verizon sent me notification that I must change the name of my outgoing server. When I get into Thunderbird settings there are about 3 choices in the dropdown list for outgoing server None of them are what I need and Thunderbird will not allow me to enter a new name in this field.

Maybe a picture will help get you to the correct spot.

Try the correct field. The server name goes in a typeable field, not a drop down list.
I would not advise changing the server name for an existing account without moving any emails that you want to keep to a folder or folders under Local Folders. Thunderbird might see this as a new account and remove all the old messages if you do.

Can you tell me where to find a typeable field? The only place I find the STMP (outgoing) field is when I click on the main email tab. I find the POP (incoming) field under settings, but no STMP field anywhere else.
I think I may have worded things wrong. I'm not actually trying to rename a server, rather trying to enter a new STMP path, which I can't do.
From the menu bar select Tools-Account Settings- Outgoing Server
No menu bar with Tools? Press the alt key.
That is where I have been trying to make a change: tools/account settings/outgoing server. When I try to select the outgoing server I am given a drop down list of paths to choose from. 3 of them are the old Verizon outgoing server path and the last selection offered is: Use Default Server. There is no way to change it to what I need.
You are in the wrong place. At the bottom of the account listing on the left is Outgoing Server (SMTP)
Yes, that is where I am looking, but unlike the incoming server (POP) on the Server Settings tab I am not able to type into the outgoing server (SMTP) section. Just to be totally clear, underneath the outgoing server field is a button that says "Manage Identities"

No maybe about it, I needed the picture!!! I have 3 accounts with lots of folders and the correct outgoing server selection was so far down on my screen that it was not visible until I knew exactly where to look. Sorry to be so dense. Thank you SO much!!! I wouldn't have found it without that screen shot
