Some emails received come with attachments that are just icons such as facebook or the company logo. How do I stop these please?

The emails may have attachments (such as documents) which I do want to receive. But there also lots of attachments that appear to be logo icons. Examples are facebook, the specific company logo, twitter etc. I am concerned that they are adding to the storage demands and also will effect the speed of loading emails. I would like to stop the logos / icons but still receive the documents the sender wants me to have. If you could hep me do this I would appreciate it. Thanks. Please bear in mind I am not very tech savvy.

The icons were added as part of the email. You cannot change what someone else puts in their email.

If you already have the setting to not show remote content then you should not be seeing the icons in the email content, but you will see empty boxes with a broken link icon, where the icons were positioned. This has no effect on reading attachments.

One method you could use is to read those messages using Plain Text instead of HTML.

  • View > Message Body as > Plain Text

If you mean there are several icons added as attachments - not in content - plus the actual document you want to read. Do not use the 'Save all' or 'Open all' option for very obvious reasons. Instead, right click on the attached document you want to read and select to 'Open' or 'Save as'.

Any attachment can be deleted or detached. If you want to keep the email but not keep the attachments, you can right click on an attachment and select 'Delete'.

If you want to keep the email and attachment, but not keep the attachment with the email because it uses a lot of space, you can right click on an attachment and select 'Detach'. This will allow you to store the attachment document in a different location outside of Thunderbird. In it's place will be a link, so you can still use the 'attachment' link to open the document, but as it is no longer with the email, it will reduce the size of the email and therefore offer more space in folder.

If you want to keep the attachment but not the email, do as above to 'detach' and save the document, then delete the email.

go to Preferences -> Privacy and uncheck 'Allow remote content in messages'. That will keep from loading any remote content without permission. Then on an individual message you can allow download if it is something you want to see. As part of that process, you can allow all remote content from that sender if you wish, so you won't have to give permission the next time. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remote-content-in-messages for more on the topic.

Thanks for your reply. I have the box you refer to unchecked already. The problem is if someone sends an attachment that I want to read if I accept it I also get all the rubbish icons as well. Do you know anyway of stopping them please?

If you want only attachments, you could open them without allowing the remote content; you would have to save them first, and then open them.

As far as weeding out the icons, I don't know of anything to do that.

Thanks all for your very detailed help. It will take me a while to understand it all as being a bit slow on IT I will have to work my way through the solutions. Thanks again.
