If you assign Firefox to handle those 8 file types/protocols, does it "stick" or does it come undone again?

I believe the 2 out of 8 refers to different kinds of file types (or perhaps protocol types like HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP) that Windows can assign to Firefox instead of a different program. The installer should assign them all at once, but other programs may assert their prerogative to take them over again. I think that lower link* should let you fix it manually.

But I think your bigger point is, why is Waterfox here (if you removed it) and where is Firefox? Good questions. They are installed into completely different program folders, so Firefox should not be missing from the dialog.

Or is that's not the question, could you explain where the mix-ups are?

On the subject of problems with images, if you get glitches like horizontal lines, fuzziness, odd overlays, and so on, then Firefox might not be completely compatible with your graphics card/chipset driver software. The standard workaround for that -- if updating your graphics card/chipset drivers doesn't help -- is to disable Firefox from using hardware acceleration. You can do that in the Options dialog.

Could you try disabling graphics hardware acceleration? Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

This will take effect the next time you exit Firefox and start it up again.

These programs have a setting that will see if it is the default program. And they can change the computers settings to do that.

it does not happen always, when i posted about this it was i think second time when i so something like this, either way i turned off hardware acceleration (but if necessary can i turn it on for videos separately or it won't let me cause it is turned off from options? just curious), i remember in past hardware acceleration was necessary, with out that flash video would lag

its interesting, sometimes in youtube it asks do i wanna allow NVIDIA 3D Vision plugin or keep blocking & sometimes not, but not always so maybe fox itself is bit broken, even if the issue is with hardware acceleration it mite be cause some parts of fox are broken that cause the issue with hardware? cause this fox is not the same what i installed on my new PC first time, first it has gotten 3 or 4 updates with that time, i think first in this PC was ver 32, i remember it was 30 or above, in extreme case it could have been 29 & above, then this last month i have reinstalled fox 2 times, updates or reinstall mite have messed fox up a bit? (cause i noticed that awry game & program leaves remains in PC even if u try clean uninstall & search & delete all that remains of it, maybe that the source of the issue?)

Sys info, maybe it can help shad some light in to the problem

Let's see if I can cover all of those.

(1) Windows file associations

Hopefully Windows 8.1 will remember the associations you set in that dialog. (If it forgets, it could be caused by a conflict with another program that wants to take over those same file types and protocols, or perhaps there is a problem with the Windows registry or maybe you have some security software that protects against registry changes. I'm not sure we can help with this.)

I don't think your web browser normally is the default client for .txt files. Usually it would be an editor such as Notepad. If you want to open a .txt file in your browser, you could either drag it to an open tab and drop it there, or right-click the file and try "Open With".

(2) Hardware acceleration

If your graphics problems are very rare, we won't be able to tell whether turning it off is helping, so it makes more sense to keep acceleration enabled.

(3) Nvidia capabilities

I can't help with this.

(4) MSE

I haven't tried enabling MSE. If you try it, does it improve things?
