I can not update Firefox

I have been trying to update Firefox to the latest version since September 2014. Every time I try it just says it's trying to connect to the server but does nothing. The only way to update is to download a new version, and that then leaves multipule versions on my computer.

Is this normal, it's just that I am used to using apple products and they "just work".

I have done that, but do I have to do that every time there is an update?
