Restore from the backup you made before resetting your computer. Not sure why you expect items that were not on the computer from the factory to be recoverable after a reset.

I followed a procedure to restore a damaged operating system without having to format my hard drive. I tried a new instal of Thunderbird but could not direct it to my old email files. Not exactly sure what to do.

Those instructions are provided by Microsoft. They protect their files. All others are up for grabs. Once a month someone is here with the same story.
