At your suggestion I did the reset this morning and now ALL of my bookmarks are gone. How do I retrieve them?

Resetting Firefox shouldn't delete your bookmarks.

What steps did you follow?

When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder. You should find JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder in the profile folder saved on the desktop.
