Firefox Ver. 34.0.5 cannot render main Youtube.com page, cannot access any videos.

Hi; I've upgraded to Firefox Ver. 34.0.5, running on HP box, running very stable WinXP, SP3 O/S. Initial version of Firefox was 3.0.19, and I went thru upgrade steps to most recent version. Initial problems with plugins resolved, but now I have very strange problem where I cannot even render the main "Youtube.com" webpage. Page renders without any style-sheet/CSS information. No images are shown. This problem *only* evident on Youtube.com (and Youtube.ca, and such). Page partially renders, with just buttons and text. I also have TOR installed, Version 4.0.2 (most recent). The Firefox browser with TOR works correctly for Youtube, ie. renders main site webpage and shows videos ok, but of course, it is slow and choppy. But here is the very kinky fact: This failure to render Youtube.com main screen page (and cannot access any videos), is constant across *all* versions of Firefox. I completely removed Firefox (all versions), and reinstalled my old Firefox version 3.0.19, and now even it cannot render Youtube.com. I've checked network, DNS settings, rebooted routers, and confirmed all other LAN and WiFi attached P/Cs, running older (and same version) of Firefox all render Youtube.com page correctly. I reloaded Firefox 34.0.5 in safe mode (no plugins), and *still* it cannot render Youtube.com. On my various others sites, running in regular mode, all pages seem to render correctly (both http and https). I have tried numerous proxy settings on Firefox 34.0.5, but Youtube.com fails to render. It looks like an issue with TOR browser (which is forked from Firefox ver. 31, I think). I have attached a .jpg file image of the non-rendered Youtube.com main webpage. Note: I installed Firefox ver. 34.0.5 on Dell laptop, running WinXP, SP3, and after upgrading some plugins, it runs flawlessly. In fact, I have steamed NHK World TV website from Japan for several hours this evening using the Dell, with Firefox 34 and WinXP-SP3, with Flash plugin, and it has worked flawlessly. TOR-browser (Firefox 31, with SOCKS proxy to port 9150 also renders Youtube site ok, and can access an play videos. But *all* other browsers on the HP machine now fail to render Youtube.com in same way. I have also checked SSL certificates, and all seems to be ok on the HP box. Any suggestions appreciated. Got it! I have spent *days* on this, because it just bugged me so much!

FOund it by searching and reading all the "youtube"-related Mozilla FIrefox support forums. Thx guys.

Problem was an old hard-coded fix that I put into my HOSTS file, on my Windows XP, SP3 machine. Specifically, I had experienced hang issues with a site called "i.ytimg.com", which I believe is the static cache for Google/Youtube stuff. I tracked this error down to failures of security certificates, but confirmed my security cert store was isometric between my machine cluster (they were all the damn same!) So, I had put two lines in the HOSTS file, to hard-code an IP address so that Google-youtube pages would not hang up waiting for "i.ytimg.com" Well, of course, Google/Youtube is now using different locations, or akami servers or some damn thing...

The fix just involved removing these two hard-coded lines from my HOSTS file. I just commented the old fix out, and now everything works.

# 74.125.162.39        static.cache.l.google.com   s.ytimg.com
# 74.125.162.39        static.cache.l.google.com   i.ytimg.com

(The # symbol is used to make a comment in hosts file... )

On Windows XP, XP3, the "hosts" file is typically located in: 

     C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

If you are having goofy problems with some youtube/google webpages not rendering, or generating SSL (bad_certificate) errors, check your "hosts" file, and ensure no ip redirection has been slotted in there from a while back.

hello, 

         i think you have to change some firewall settings . All versions of Windows each have slightly different ways to configure the built-in Firewall, but they are fairly close once you find your Control Panel. Instructions for configuring the Windows 7 Firewall to open the required ports are below.

 1)  Click Start
 2)  Click Control Panel
 3) Click System and Security
 4)  Click Windows Firewall
 5)  Click Advanced Setings
 6)  Click Inbound Rules
 7)  Under Actions, click New Rule
 8)  Select the "Port" option and click Next
 9)  In the "Specific Local Ports" box, type the following: 80, 8080, 8000, 50000, 53, 443, 843
10) Select "Allow the Connection"
 11)Select a Network type and click Next
   12)Name the rule
  13) Click Finish

If you are still have problem after doing this firewall settings . reply us

Bizarre behaviour noticed... I was reseaching other folks posts who had reported problems with "Youtube.com", and just for curiosity, I clicked a blue highlighted "Youtube.com" link. This took me directly to the Youtube page, and *rendered it correctly*, complete with full-motion video in high-res, in the advert. I noticed that when I entered "http://www.youtube.com" in the command line of Firefox 34.0.5, it would be translated to: "https://www.youtube.com". I thought this was Google doing it, but maybe not. I noticed there was some kind of "https for everything" feature on the "Tools" menu of the Tor-firefox browser. Tor does not have any "uninstall" program associated with it. If I can nail down exactly what is happening, I will report the results here. - Mark

The firewall is not the issue. I simply disabled the firewall, and confirmed that same rendering problem exists. And, I cannot replicate whatever happened to allow the Youtube.com site to render, when it did. Only way I can see any Youtube videos, is with Tor-Firefox (version 4.0.2 Tor, which uses ver. 31.x of Firefox), and only with Tor running, which makes video streaming way too slow. Problem not solved. The main "Youtube.com" page does not render correctly (see the .jpg image), and no Youtube.com videos at all can be viewed. All Youtube.com videos report as "This video is unavailable." - Mark
