Can not import a .json book mark file (or an HTML BM file or Chrome BM's)

Started FF with no plugins and it locks up tight when trying to import a recently made json file from my PC that died. Does the same with less desirable HTML book marks or importing of Chrome bookmarks.

This crappy behavior is years old and has followed me across 5 or 6 PC's....

In a similar thread a year or so ago, after a lot of back and forth, the user ended up reporting that Firefox eventually restored bookmarks successfully and unfroze after being allowed an extended period of time to complete the operation.

I'm not sure how long you let it go, but maybe give it 10 minutes and see whether that helps? You can open the Windows 7 Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to the Processes tab to keep watch on whether Firefox is active or dead.

I don't know what is going on but I can not find the places.sqlite database file or the profile folder --- either manually or using the search function.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

places.sqlite is stored in the <strike>Program Files folders</strike> profile folder for Firefox.

Use Help > Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Folder - Show Folder = that's where your places.sqlite file can be found.

BTW, the JSON bookmarks files don't get Imported, they need to be Restored.

FINALLY! I did a complete "reset Firefox" on Firefox, and it still kept hanging up when trying to restore my .json bookmark file.

It was VERY strange that the script that kept hanging was a chrome script. (see the screen capture) I closed all Chrome processes and it still kept hanging.

After many more attempts my book marks were finally imported. Now I am afraid to synch them with Xmarks :-P

Anyhow thanks for the ideas. I wish Firefox would address this issue as I have had it for 2 or 3 years across 5 or 6 machines and if it were not for tags I would have long ago ditched Firefox.

I spoke too soon!!

Xmarks wiped out my book marks. After a few hours of playing I managed to get them back BUT when I close Firefox they are gone for good!

      • Doing so again.... I keep letting the script go when it hangs and the install of bookmarks seems to have worked this time. I will know when I get brave enough to close Firefox and then open it!--- IT may be the case that xmarks did not mess with the BM but rather just me closing FF before it was done.

Thank you for reporting back.

Just to clarify, Mozilla uses the term chrome internally to refer to the user interface of the browser. Another company apparently liked that idea a lot. ;-)

Thanks that clears up a lot of confusion.

I am just sooo glad to be finished with the Firefox bookmarks nightmare that seems to plague me every so often.

Thanks for the ideas and the support.  :-)
