How do I know if I have the correct version of Firefox on my Windows 8 laptop?

I usually just click on the "update Firefox" button, but I now wonder if the "beta" version is what I should be using.

Ok, to uninstall Firefox:

  1. Press Windows Key+C simultaneously to open the Charms bar.
  2. Search for programs and features.
  3. Click the first result, Programs and Features.
  4. In Programs and Features, find Mozilla Firefox, right click it, and select uninstall.
  5. Go through the uninstaller. (Be sure to not check the Remove profile information option in the uninstaller if you want to keep your Firefox settings!)

Install normal version of Firefox:

  1. Click here.
  2. Download the installer.
  3. Run the downloaded file.
  4. Follow the instructions in Setup to install the normal version of Firefox.

  • If your version of Firefox says 33.0.X, you're using the stable release, which is what you should be using if you're a normal user.
  • If the Firefox version is anything above that (and the About window tells you that you're on a beta update channel), you're using the beta which is meant for beta testers, professionals, and enthusiasts.

(Note that this info can change at any time as newer releases of stable Firefox versions come out.)

I'd recommend staying with the stable release and if you're on the beta, uninstall it and download the stable version from Firefox.com

Thank you. The update that I'm being asked to add is 34.0 beta 6. I have no idea how I got this, because I am definitely not a beta tester, or professional. And since I am just a casual user, how do I uninstall this version of Firefox? I appreciate your help!

It sounds that you are on the beta update channel. You can see that in Help > About You need to install the full version of the current release to switch from the beta update channel to the release update channel.

You can find the full version of the current Firefox 33.0.2 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

I apologize, but I don't want to do anything to mess up my computer.  :| Do I go to the link that cor-el posted and click on "download" on the English (US) line, under the Windows column? The current (beta) version doesn't need to be uninstalled first?

I'm a "tentative" computer user, not at all confident when I'm not certain about what to do. Thank you so much.

You can uninstall your current Firefox beta version if possible to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing the newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
