A tb31.1.1 release is on its way, probably within days.

Which update did you get today? Thunderbird 31.1.0? What was the last version that did work? For me address lists still work. Can you try in safe mode to see if an add-on is causing your problems?

more options

31.1.0 is the current version. Whatever version existed before this one worked fine until it updated to the current version yesterday (2 Sep 2014). I tried it in safe mode (without add-ons (I don't have any add-ons anyway)) and I still get the same error message.

As you need this fixed quickly: You could uninstall the current version via Control panel > Programs and Features and reinstall a previous version, download from here:

Version 31.0:

Version 24.7:

click on the type for your OS. eg: If using Windows select 'win32' then select the language eg: en-GB = English british

then download the .exe file

If I uninstall and re-install a previous version will I lose my address book and lists? My email and files?

more options

The thunderbird program is not stored in the same place as your thunderbird Profile. So, uninstalling and reinstalling should not effect anything in the profile folder including emails, address books etc.

However, it is always a good idea to backup your Profile, just in case :) You can use tools such as MoxBackup and/or ImportExporttool or manually copy your Profile folder to an external device. All info at links below:

If I uninstall and re-install what is to prevent TB from updating automatically?

more options

You can set this in the Options window.

Tools > Options > Advanced > Update tab or 3bar menu icon > Options > Options > Advanced > Update tab

select: Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them

You could select to never check, but they do not recommend it. click on OK to save changes.

Actually . . . pleasantly surprised . . . your suggestion worked! I uninstalled 31.1.0 and reinstalled 31.0 and I can e-mail to my lists again. Also changed the update settings as your recommended. Thank you.

Further update: In the bug:

comment 5 says This has been reported as:

If you have an account on Bugzilla, please consider voting for that issue.

Several other people have sent in the same support request as you, noting this happened after they upgraded to version 31.1.

The exact error message is: XXXX is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail.

This happens when your mailing list description includes several words separated by spaces.

If you choose to update to the recent version, although not ideal, these workarounds should let you use your mailing lists until a proper fix is implemented:

  • While composing an email open the address book and select the list you are trying to send to, highlight all the names in the list and drag them to the To: box. This uses your existing data without modifying it.
  • Replacing the blanks " " between the words in such lists' descriptions with an underscore "_". This requires modifying your mailing list(s) description(s).

What I have noticed so far, is that the issue, which (as far as I can see) seems to reappear after EVERY update of the program (currently, for example, I've experienced it again after updating to 31.2.0), can be completely fixed simply by erasing and then rewriting the list affected.

Of course, I understand very well that actually this is not a real fix, especially when one has lists with hundreds of names... but, at least, it surely works (with the minimum amount of additional hassle) ^_^

Hope this helps...

Finding solutions to a specific question about Thunderbird is extremely difficult. All I want to know is how to set up a list using "user@host". In the past I was able to simply click on my list as the addressee. Now it won't send my message to the list, but says I have to set up my list as a user@host list. Can someone just put in simple terms how to do that?

Well you located the question and the answer, but it would seem you have not actually read any of the responses. You do not set up a list using "user@host". The message you are getting about using "user@host". is an error message caused by the Mailing List name. The fix around this is already stated in previous responses. Please read the comments.

In your particular case, it would help if you stated what version of Thunderbird you are using and what is the name of the Mailing List.

I'm running the most up to date verion 31.3.0 I have a Mailing List called 'Test This' there is a space between the words. I do not have any issue. So first make sure you are running the most up to date version of Thunderbird.

more options

Thanks, Toad-Hall. I am, in fact, running the latest version, 31.3.0. When I open my address book and click on one of my specific lists, then click on "Write", it will open a Write page, but will list all of the addressees individually on many lines of the address list. However, I found that from the "home" page (Inbox-Local Folders) I can click on "Write", then on the first addressee line, I just start typing in the name of the list I want to send to and it automatically loads the list. That way it puts the entire list of the addressees on the one line as, for example <DHS 1955>. I then set it to "BCC" to keep all the recipients from seeing so many email addresses on the email they receive. So...I don't know if I'm doing it the right way, but it works for me. Thanks again for your help, and I apologize for expressing my frustration. Sid

Yes, what you are doing is ok. But there is also another method whilst in the new write window. Enable the Contacts sidebar - F9 key will toggle the view choose address book select the Mailing list name click on 'add to Bcc' button or other

see image below.

Toad-Hall...Thanks so much for that info about using F9 to enable the Contacts Sidebar! I have three tree family lists, a high school class list, a military friends list and a travel group list. Using your instructions really makes it a lot easier! Before, I was having to move down the list and click on BCC by each addressee! I appreciate your help. Sid
