I raised this topic a few months ago and I never was able to fix it and went back to Firefox 29 which has been fine. I would like to know (or find out) if Firefox 31 has fixed it but if not I want to be able to come back to 29.

The symptom was that when I tried to start Firefox all I got was a very brief flash of the main window then it vanished. No error messages. No crash reports. Running Windows XP on a Dell Laptop.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks Peter M

If Firefox doesn't crash in Safe Mode this is an easy fix :)

Simply update to Firefox 31, see if there is an issue. If there is, Reset Firefox. Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

If Firefox still has a problem, please let us know :)

I need to be sure I can get back to 29 if 31 is the same as 30 and won't start. Remember I may not be able to ask for help without a working Firefox. Safe mode did not always work with FF30. I see there is a file called "Firefox setup 29.0.1.exe" in my downloads folder. If I copy this to desktop and (if I need to) uninstall 31 using Add/Remove Programs, will running that file get me back to where I am now? What about Bookmarks/History etc.?

Yes running that file will install 29 and save your personal data. Also remember that you can use another browser (like IE) to come to this site and continue getting Firefox to work

Thanks for your help. I have now updated to FF31 and it seems to be OK so far. It hasn't crashed on start-up as FF30 did (See my previous question in June).

Can you confirm that if I do need to backtrack to 29.0 again, I do it by uninstalling 31.0 using Add/Remove Programs then running Firefox Setup 29.0.1. Please confirm that my History/Bookmarks/etc. data will be kept if I do this.

It is not always guaranteed that you keep all setting when you downgrade from the current release to an older version. Newer Firefox versions can switch to using different files at any time (e.g. Firefox 32 and later use a different logins.json file to store passwords instead of signons.sqlite and later Firefox 34 versions use xulstore.json instead of localstore.rdf). Such a downgrade can also be the cause of issues.

Thank you for your comment, but I will only need to downgrade if future versions fail to start. FF30 failed for me so I had to downgrade to FF29. FF31 seems to be OK so maybe there will be no more problem.

You mentioned FF32 and FF34, but the FF29 I was using since June told me to upgrade to FF31. Will FF31 inform me about FF32 and FF34 or are these for some other operating system?

Firefox 31 is the current release and Firefox 32, 33, and 34 are development versions that will become the next releases and are currently available for testers.
