Unable to connect to ANY account in Linux Mint 17 64bit ("Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?")

more options

So after working all day to get my OS's working together I tried to use Thunderbird on my Linux Mint 17 64bit. Upon entering my details, Thunderbird claims that they are wrong. I have checked and verified several times that they are indeed right. I looked around and the closes I could find to anything helpful regarding my issue was a post about a similar issue on Linux Mint 16 64bit when all that was said was "reset gateway firewall" which is not exactly the most helpful thing. Either way, I both reset the whole router, and then even VERIFIED that nothing was blocked through it and as far as the linux firewall goes, I either have none or haven't enabled it as far as I know. I am quite new to Linux in general so I need something that is pretty easy to understand in terms of a fix, assuming anyone knows it. I would love to get this working as it is pretty much the last obsticle in my way. If anyone knows anything that might help, PLEASE share! Thanks!

Configuration could not be verified

This seems to indicate a problem when setting up the account. But according to your Troubleshooting Information an account already exists. Please confirm what you're doing when getting this error.

I also have 2-step verification set up

Set up an application specific password as per Google instructions and use that. https://support.google.com/accounts/topic/28786?hl=en&ref_topic=3382253

Are you still trying to set up an account, or has the account already been set up, and you're struggling to get mail?

more options

Sorry, I pressed the wrong button on my phone and it marked that as the solution, but I am trying to set up thunderbird for the first time ever. The email accounts I want to use are ones i have been using for years. I have already ensured that imap and pop are enabled on them as well, if that helps.

When running the new account wizard, does Thunderbird detect the correct settings for your account? If not choose 'Manual Configuration'. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/manual-account-configuration

Make sure you do have all the information needed from your email provider.

Done and done. Still no luck. Regardless of what I make the imap or smtp info, it doesn't change. Aside from that i have everything else set up but it still will not let me in.

re :but it still will not let me in.

when you startup thunderbird, it will use the info to connect to server. What error message do you get...word for word?

Make sure your User Name = full email address.

re password: I notice you mention a phone. Do you use the Phone and the computer to access emails? Did you set up a two step verification process with gmail to access email using your phone?

more options

The first answer is: "Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?" (neither are wrong). I do use my phone and computer to access emails (the email client on my phone) and I also have 2-step verification set up, yes.

The account was at one point forced through but it was still broken, i deleted it and it still gives the error. I will try the app specific password and get back to you but it also gives the same problem for hotmail accounts that do NOT have 2-step verification so fingers crossed

Holy crap finally! The app specific password totally worked, thank you so much!!
