I have just changed internet provider and they have suggested that I set up a gmail email address so that I can keep it just in case I change providers in the future. I have set up a gmail account which I want to appear in thunderbird rather than having to go into my gmail account everytime to get my emails. What do I need to do? I have clearly done something wrong as I am not receiving emails at all but they are going to gmail. Thank you. Julie

Work through the instructions at the link and if you still have a problem please provide the followng information.

Please post info: In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'copy text to clipboard' paste info into this question then edit/remove all info on fonts and printers.

When you open Thunderbird, what do you see in the left Folder Pane? Can you see your email address at the top with a white envelope and padlock? Are there any folders below it?

Does Thunderbird attempt to logon to the server, what error message if any, do you get...word for word?

In Thunderbird, File|New|Existing Mail Account

and fill in the details of your gmail account.

Left to itself, Thunderbird prefers to use IMAP, which means that all of your gmail messages are actually stored on the gmail servers and you are loaned a temporary copy to work with in Thunderbird, and will use gmail's servers to send your messages.

If the idea of the messages being left on gmail's servers bothers you, watch out for the option to use POP instead, which will simply suck all your incoming mail down into Thunderbird and delete the copy on the server.

In either case, you won't ordinarily need to visit the gmail website to work with your email, except perhaps occasionally to alter some settings.

Thank you everyone for coming back to me. I have done as suggested and changed the settings on my gmail account and I am now receiving emails via Thunderbird. I changed the port when setting up my account to 110. Thanks once again!
