Firefox immediately starts to play audio rather than allowing me to save the file. This is a recent change as it had always allowed me to save.

Right-click the link and choose Save Link As.

If you left-click a direct link to an MP3 file, Firefox will always play it, regardless of your settings under Options → Applications (this is a known issue: bug 861090). To disable built-in support for MP3 files,

  1. Type about:config into the address bar and press Enter.
  2. To bypass the warning, press the big button labeled "I'll be careful, I promise!".
  3. In the search box, paste media.directshow.enabled
  4. In the search results, double-click media.directshow.enabled to set its value to false.

Note that you should be able to save such a file played by the HTML5 media player if you right-click the player.
