When I type about:config, browser.newtab.url and searchreset.backup.browser.newtab.url are set to www.trovis.com. Modify does not change anything. How to fix?

When I open a new tab, it opens with Trovi search engine. Using one of the answers in Mozilla support, I tried opening about.config and tried to change browser.newtab.url to www.google.com. The modify did not work. Also searchreset.backup.browser.newtab.url shows www.trovi.com. I also noticed that browser.newtabpage.blocked and browser.newtabpage.pinned entries had undecipherable codes. I would very much like a solution to this problem.
