I notice in the new version of Mozilla there is a new feature that has been added which prevents you from bookmarking the same thing twice can you please tell me how I can disable this as I have thousands of bookmarks and trying to search for something I do not even know the name would be nearly impossible for me to do...

That feature was "added" either in Firefox 3.6 or 4.0.

If you "drag" the Favicon from the Tab into a bookmarks folder you can add a copy of a bookmark that is already saved. Or you can use "Copy" in the Libary window > Organize --> Copy to copy a bookmark into a different folder.

If that worked for you previous to Firefox 29, it must have been a feature of an add-on that you had installed, which is now incompatible or not present.

I t was added in version 29 as I never had this problem before, I do not want to a work around it I want to disable it, Perhaps it would be better if I give a example of what I am referring to, Go click on bookmarks up by the history and tools there you will see a option to bookmark this page go ahead and do so, then refresh the page and then go try to do the exact same thing again and you will notice that the option to bookmark the page is now gone, Now if you go to delete the bookmark and refresh the page the option is back...

Now here is what they did not take into account when they added this option,

1 Not everyone has a photographic memory and cannot remember the name of a site they bookmarked or for that matter where they even put it.

2 When you have a place that is already bookmarked it does give you the the option to see the name of the bookmark so you do not even know what to search for not all places you book mark will have the same name as the site...

So I would please like to be able to disable this option and have it the way it was before...

I have this problem also! Sometime I intentionally want to bookmark something twice in two different folders. Mozilla is now preventing that. Knowing you already bookmarked it once is a good idea though, so instead of removing the option "Bookmark this page" change it to "Bookmark again".

Thanks!

You can easily bookmark a specific link more than once by making a copy of the bookmark in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) or dragging the tab or Site Identity Button (globe/padlock) to a folder in the bookmarks sidebar (Show your bookmarks > View Bookmarks Sidebar).

Thanks!... but I know there are a variety of methods that are more cumbersome than what I usually do - I just want to click on Bookmarks and bookmark a page like I would any other page, far easier than following a special procedure. I certainly never want to open a bookmarks sidebar!!! Mozilla has suddenly decided to remove the bookmark option if you've already bookmarked a page, once again over-thinking the solution.... like Microsoft always does.

I to want the old option back that for some reason many my bookmarks come up missing I like to be able to multiple copys and change the name of them so I can remember them the way it is now its just to troublesome...

I agree. I intentionally want to bookmark the same URL in two places. In this particular case, I want one of the bookmarks in a folder, and the other to be a link in the bookmarks toolbar - the one directly below the address bar. Apparently, you consider this a feature. Why on earth would you intentionally prevent me from doing that?

Bookmarks manager? Site identity button? I've been trying to follow your directions and can't find these things. Your instructions might make sense to a moderator - or to someone who's programming for Mozilla. But for the rest of us, Mozilla is not our destination - it's supposed to be a quick tool to help us get to where we're really going. You're making this WAY too hard. Just allow us to bookmark a site twice. (If you want to create a popup that tells us we've already bookmarked it and ask if we're sure we want to do it again, that's okay. Just stop making it so hard to do if that's what we actually want to do.) Seriously. Your users want to be able to bookmark the same URL more than once.

Hi lorenip, do you have any bookmark-related add-ons that might have stopped working and need to be updated? I ask because Firefox has prevented duplicate bookmarks for a long time. (Example of similar thread regarding Firefox 6: why can't i save the same bookmarks in different locations?)

To check your extensions for update, open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then click the "gear" button above the list and choose Check for Updates.

I agree it would be a nice feature to add a duplicate option to the Edit Bookmark dialog. You can submit new feature suggestions here:

Sorry, but your complaint is about a feature (or lack thereof) which has not been in Firefox for a long time now, whether you believe that or not. You may have used an extension in the past which restored that old feature, and have forgotten that was longer a standard feature in Firefox.

Bookmark Tags where added at the same time as Mozilla made it more difficult to save a duplicate bookmark. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/categorizing-bookmarks-make-them-easy-to-find

Personally, I don't like "Tags" and prefer to save the same bookmark in multiple folders, using the drag'n'drop method into the Bookmarks Sidebar view as I explained 5 weeks ago.
