When I delete a message, all messages disappear from all folders. (win10)

When I delete a message, all messages disappear from all folders. After I close and reopen Thunderbird, the messages reappear, but the next time I delete a message, the same thing happens.

I have rebooted my PC in hope that the problem would correct itself, but no luck. Thanks for any help you can offer.

What version? What happens after you uncheck "Compact all folders ..." in Settings > General?
