This is the latest combination that crashes on my system (Vista). I have disabled RealPlayer, and have the latest GPU drivers. Some suggested fixes involve disabling protected mode. Isn't this like solving the problem of a tight seat-belt by removing it?

Here is the reply given by jscher2000 in the thread you mentioned, Adobe flash 14 (latest version) crashes everytime in Firefox 30.0

This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common reasons for Flash problems in Firefox. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:

(1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.

(2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Flash

See this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

(3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8)

The following pages/posts provide different ways to do that:

Flash needs to completely unload from memory (restarting Firefox might help) before this would take effect.

Note the links under (3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8) refer to disabling protected mode in FLASH, which applies to Windows Vista and above. You can also refer to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Flash_Protected_Mode_issues_on_Windows_Vista_and_above for more information.

Disable hardware acceleration in Flash

Go to this Adobe Flash Player

Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.

Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.

Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.
Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.

Restart Firefox

Sorry folks. There is a better thread on this: "Adobe flash 14 (latest version) crashes everytime in Firefox 30.0"

I entered this one to set up an account (you must ask a question to get an account .. not a good policy IMHO)

Well, if you don't leave your ID, how will you know there is an answer waiting for you? All web sites do this. Some charge for the access.

FredMcD: Obviously it makes sense to register. My point is, you should not have to ask a question in order to register. Because of this, multiple threads on the same topic are opened (you have to ask something) hence the duplication of questions on the same topic. I had already searched for the thread I wanted to comment on ... but the system will not allow you to comment until you register, and the only way to register is to ask a question. Catch 22

It would be much better to allow someone to register as a separate function, and then post on the thread of their choice, thereby eliminating all the clutter.

The forum is designed for threads to be a single question from a single user. It i also expected that those threads may be found by someone with a problem especially the threads marked with a solution.

Once you do post your own question you will be registered, and as such you then have the ability to mention your question in related threads. Your own question will hopefully; if you are able to successfully follow prompts; contain all the important troubleshooting information.

If you wish to post to answer questions, rather than to ask a question then you may wish to register as a contributor.

The forum design is yet again under review but as I said earlier it is so far intended to be a single question per thread. It is not intended to be a forum with threads on individual subjects.

There is a problem when there are new new breaking issues. At one time there was a suggestion to try to concentrate work on that. Currently there is no proper policy, but my opinion is to use whatever thread is active, and cross link from that as a control thread, encourage others with solutions and questions to open a separate thread.

Example For instance if Firefox hangs spin off threads for

  • only in Firefox 29/ But not Fx30
  • hangs still seen in Beta channel F31 ( & ?? to/for Nightly Fx33)
  • Only in Window XP / or old hardware
  • Only if history cleared on closing

All of those are plausible questions and problems but we would get in a mess clumping them all in to one unreadable long thread.

The subject of this thread is FlashPlayer, and there must be numerous reasons why Flash Player will or could crash, and no one size fits all solution We do try to a have support (KB) help articles though e,g,
