This feature is experimental and is being introduced to the Firefox user base through a progressive rollout. It may not yet be available to all users.
VPN is a built-in Firefox feature that adds privacy by routing your browser traffic through a secure proxy server and masking your IP address. The feature includes a monthly data limit of 50 GB. Firefox will notify you when you are approaching this limit with a prompt in the browser. It is available to a limited set of users during the initial rollout, starting with Firefox version 149.
Unlike Mozilla VPN, which protects your entire device, the built-in VPN only masks traffic that originates in Firefox. It's free to use and doesn’t require a subscription.
To use VPN, you need to sign in with a Mozilla account. If you’re eligible, you’ll see a prompt in the Firefox toolbar inviting you to set up the feature.

Common questions
Are any websites excluded from VPN protection?
Some essential Mozilla services are excluded from VPN routing to ensure sign-in, VPN reconnection, and screens needed to sign in for public Wi-Fi work properly. All other browsing activity in Firefox remains protected when the VPN is on.
Can I use Firefox normally with VPN on?
Yes. VPN doesn’t affect your browsing experience. However, keep in mind that the monthly data limit is 50 GB.
Does VPN protect my whole device?
No. The built-in VPN only hides your IP address and location while browsing in Firefox. It does not protect traffic from other apps on your device. For full-device protection, we offer Mozilla VPN.
How does Mozilla handle my data?
We collect technical data needed to provide, maintain, and ensure the performance and stability of the service, as well as interaction data to understand usage of the feature and help guide improvements. For example, we may log whether a connection succeeded or failed, or record that 2 GB of data was used on a certain day.
Importantly, VPN never logs the websites you visit or the content of your communications.
What if I subscribe to Mozilla VPN?
The VPN is free and browser-only. If you choose to subscribe to Mozilla VPN, you’ll get device-level protection, including:
- Encrypted traffic across all apps and services, not just Firefox.
- Additional privacy features and customization options.
If you're a Mozilla VPN subscriber, we recommend removing the VPN icon from the toolbar to avoid duplicate protection. On Windows, you can also install the Mozilla VPN extension to obtain even more value from your subscription.
How do I turn off or remove VPN from my toolbar?
Right-click the VPN icon in the toolbar and choose Remove from Toolbar. You can re-enable it later from the Customize Toolbar menu.
Where can I get help or give feedback?
