Potential issue due to this change, from the related bug 1773342: (quote) Mark Striemer [:mstriemer] Reporter Comment 7 • 2022-06-09 19:10 EDT

Asa, this adds support for zooming content based on the Windows "Make text bigger" setting. This is in line with what other browser and apps appear to do in Windows.

However, previously users who wanted larger text for web content would need to change their Font settings in Preferences. These two settings will now be additive, meaning that if you've set your Windows setting to 150% and your minimum font size to 24px to match you'll now be getting much larger text. This would also happen if you've set your default zoom to 150% for example.

P.S. I found three support questions so far, on the Firefox 103 Windows "Make text bigger" issue. This one included a reply link to another related bug, Bug 1773633 Everything too big after Bug 1773342

I think there should be a SUMO troubleshooting article to help users with this problem, as suggested in bug 1773342 comment 7:

Mark Striemer [:mstriemer] Reporter Comment 7 • 2022-06-09 19:10 EDT (quote) Asa, this adds support for zooming content based on the Windows "Make text bigger" setting. <snip> I'm curious if you think we should provide some messaging to users that have both of these settings on, or write a new SUMO page/update an existing page to reflect the change. The fix would be to reset your font/zoom settings to default and Firefox should now provide the expected defaults based on the Windows setting. <snip>

The Accessibility features in Firefox - Make Firefox and web content work for all users "How to" article was updated by Fabi to add a new Changing the size of buttons and menus section for win, fx103 but it doesn't cover how to fix the "everything is suddenly "bigger" in 103 issue for users who want to keep their existing Windows setting. The solution that seems to work in those cases would be an about:config change (create a new Number preference ui.textScaleFactor and set it to 100), as posted in the tagged threads ...for example, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1384281#answer-1523172 ... and in this Mozilla Connect thread.

The easiest solution is to change the Windows "Make text bigger" setting back to the default 100% in (Windows) Settings ->Ease of Access/Accessibility -> Display. For users who want to keep a custom Windows setting, the alternative solution being promoted in the support forum is to create the ui.textScaleFactor preference in about:config and set it to 100 but we don't really want to tell users to use about:config in a SUMO KB article unless it's the only way to solve an issue.

Bug 1773342 comment 7 indicates (quote) The fix would be to reset your font/zoom settings to default ... but it doesn't specify where to find those settings in Firefox. The Font size and zoom - increase the size of web pages article describes how to change font and zoom settings but not specifically how to reset to defaults. I suppose a Firefox Refresh would also reset font and zoom to defaults. I don't have access to Slack but if you do, Paul, maybe you can ask Mark Striemer or another Firefox developer/product team member what the correct guidance would be.

  10. Hi all, Thanks for the comments here especially for the Font zooming situation.

For now PLEASE promote the non about:config related solution and lets see if that works for anyone.

I have sent a message over to the desktop team asking if there are any other workarounds for this we can try for users and Ill follow up if I hear back from them. Lets make sure to use the tag Kiki noted above on these as well so we can track volume and impact.

    Thank you.

  11. Ok Update on the Font Zooming Issue. I asked the Desktop team if there were other workarounds that dont include about:config. There aren't at this time. Here is the response I got:

"setting the pref browser.display.os-zoom-behavior=0 is the workaround for people who want the old behavior back (even though it's not exactly the old behavior it's simpler than explaining the nuance around this vs textScaleFactor) And that it was changed to better match the OS convention, but we're considering what to do based on the feedback that some people prefer the old behavior"

If we are sending people to about config, I think it is VERY important to mention the risks in doing so to help avoid downstream issues for users. Proceed with Caution
