Firefox Accounts final transition

  1. Hi everyone,

In June 2019 we have started the process of introducing Firefox Accounts login to support.mozilla.org. In order to make the transition easier, we allowed users to log in with both Firefox Accounts as well as their SUMO account for the last couple of months. We are now getting closer to finalizing the process and move to Firefox Accounts login only. This will happen on March 16, 2020.

What does this mean? After March 16, logins via your old SUMO account will no longer be possible. Users will only be able to log in via Firefox Accounts. All old SUMO accounts will be decommissioned. Contribution content will be kept but anonymized.

If you haven’t yet transitioned to Firefox Accounts login please do so by March 16, 2020.

IMPORTANT: Please read the FAQ before merging and make sure you know which email address you’re using for both SUMO and FxA. If you use the same email address for both accounts, we will automatically link your Mozilla Support account to your Firefox Account. If you’re using different email addresses you’ll need to first log in to your Mozilla Support account and then follow prompts to verify and link your Firefox Account to your existing Mozilla Support account.

Should you have any questions around the process please check our FAQ or reach out to Kiki, Giulia or myself.

What about my old /user/11 account? It's still linked from "AliceWyman" in some SUMO pages, such as the Recent Revisons page where AliceWyman appears under Editor, and in the Community Hub. I can't use it for anything. (As a moderator, I can edit the profile page, which I've done to identify it as mine).

I posted about this problem before. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors/710408#post-60537

  3. Did you merge your account yet, Alice? It seems like a weird redirect issue but I do think that your account will be fine as long as you've migrated.

Out of curiousity, though. How do you actually set a different profile in /user/11?

  4. Kiki, I've already transitioned my SuMo account to FxA.

/user/11 is my original profile. All numbered profiles were moved to named profiles, as I mentioned in this post, where I linked to the related bug report: Bug 882426 - Add support for /users/<sumo_username> URLs to the user profile page (quote)

    Reopen?

This bug fix 'broke' the links to my user profile on pages with links that have the user "number". Examples: https://support.mozilla.org/kb/meet-team https://support.mozilla.org/community

The links to my user profile page, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/11 should redirect to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/AliceWyman but instead, I see a profile page for user 11 that's empty except for a "Private message" link.

If I change the user number in the link to 011, it works: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/011

  5. That is weird. Pages like this link to the profile using the user_id

This URL redirects to my profile:

The ID for the AliceWyman account hasn't changed and is still 11, so maybe all that is needed is to remove (or maybe rename) that profile to see whether that makes the redirect from ID to username work properly as there seems to be a profile with a username 11.

I see that Chris Ilias has a problem with ID 13 that links to a profile from somebody else:

Are possibly more (all) IDs below 100 affected ?

  6. Will it be possible before March 16 for users to specify their username instead of defaulting to the first part of the email address when they create the account in case this is currently still not possible ?

When you do a Community Hub search for Chris_Ilias , https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/community/search?q=Chris_Ilias ..... or look through his recent article revisions, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/revisions?&users=Chris_Ilias the "View Profile" and "Editor" links go to /user/13, which has the display name Jürgen (?)

Maybe we should add something like this to the /user/13 profile page?

If you're looking for the Chris_Ilias profile page, it's here: /user/Chris_Ilias

As a moderator, I could edit the profile page myself but I'll leave that up to Chris Ilias or admin.

  8. Some of these early user account pages work properly.

    Redirects to:

Only some early accounts seem to have a number as their username and those accounts seem to be causing problems, i.e. take prevalence over resolving this to an existing SUMO account with this number as the ID. I wonder if it is possible to scan the database for such duplicate entries of the number for a username and for a ID in a different account and see whether this can be resolved by removing a possible inactive/unused account.

I don't know how and at what stage a redirect from "number -> username" to "number -> ID" happens (if "number -> username" works then you get that account, otherwise you get "number -> ID"). So, I would think that if /user/11 (id:229095) no longer can be resolved to a user with username '11' then this would be redirected automatically to the other account with "id":11.

  10. To e-motiv: If your support question wasn't solved and the Mozilla account on support.mozilla.org and I'm having problems with my Firefox Account articles don't have anything helpful, you can look through these earlier related discussions:

    1. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors/713832 Where do users go for help when they can't use a Firefox account?

    2. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors/713718 What to do for Firefox Account requests?

As suggested in the second discussion thread, you can also create a bugzilla.mozilla.org account and file a bug report under the Cloud Services product, Server: Firefox Accounts component. You can use this link.

We will try to address all the outstanding questions until then.
