What exactly does 'Archieve' do??? And why isn't there a real Help file?

OK, I remembered that I can just close Thunderbird, use Windows Explorer to copy individual mail files (without the .msf files) to any external destination and structure, and then delete the files and .msf files. The files can be restored at a future date if desired, and the .msf files will be rebuilt. QED

So apparently one cannot archive a folder. Also cannot set a random folder (outside of the mail structure) as destination. Right so far? If so, I need to do something else --
