Coming up at once after an update is OK. But further opening the information should be facultative i.e. separate.

Chosen solution

please try this: Click the menu button New Fx Menu and then click help Help-29 > troubleshooting information > profile folder - "show folder". then a new window will open up. in this window look out for a file named user.js (it might be used to overwrite your custom settings). in case it is present , delete or rename this file and restart firefox afterwards.

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

You have to be more specific. I am not an advanced user. I tried via config and browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone. Double clicked on the latter and set it to ignore. Now, whenever you update, Firefox should just open up your home page (or restore your session) as normal, without opening any new tabs that get in your way. However, reopening Firefox results in having the above mentioned setting back to 29.0. i.e. What'sNew stays. If the Firefox updates cause this setting, Firefox should modify it in such manner that it works only once, immediately after each update. Meanwhile I hope to get a simple instruction to have What'sNew removed.

Alas, user.js is missing. What to do?

Although user.js was not present, I can now go straight to my homepage. I did delete thousands JScriptfiles [all 0KB]. Nothing else. Still wonder what has happened. Thanks anyway.
