because the window hasnt been shown I cannot do anything such as disable add-ons; it began when I attached a large email to a message although this may be unrelated.

Chosen solution

No evidence, except a bad release from McAfee that has people wondering what they did.

see about using the command line to enter "safe mode"

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode#Windows.

What anti virus are you using?

Try restarting Windows in "safe mode with Networking" to stop any Anti virus interaction with the startup that might be blocking Thunderbird

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

Thanks matt but it's not sorted it. When I start in windows network safe mode and thunderbird safe it loads in only about 200mb but then after a few seconds it goes into 'not responding' and increases memory to over 1.2gb. mcafee starts loading at the same time. Thinking it might be mcafee I have tried to disable it; although I can disable the add-on I cannot remove it like you can other add-ons. I have switched off the spam filter in mcafee as well. That done it still needs at least 1.2gb to load - if it cannot find it it crashes (at least that's why I think it normally crashes). Kind regards, ned

Resolved by re-installing - now uses < 200 mb memory! No obvious difference to set up.

There's no evidence pointing to McAfee at all in this instance. The problem has gone by re-installing with all set up as before.
