Why does TB keep "not responding", even when started in safe mode?

Intermittently for the last several weeks, and consistently in the past few days, TB will not respond... it will open, but then it's slow or just won't download new e-mails, won't open e-mails, won't let me select e-mails to delete... in short, won't do anything! and Windows task manager reports TB as "not responding". In past have tried re-installing TB, but not a lasting solution. Have tried simply re-starting the program, occasionally with success. Now tried starting in safe mode... still "not responding". Running Windows 7, not using any add-ons to speak of (french dictionary, updated when required, no others that I know of), lots of computing space on the computer, probably about 1,000 saved e-mails... Don't really want to change e-mail programs, but considering it since in the last 2 days I don't really have e-mail... Argh!

What is your anti-virus software?

McAfee. I've been running the same anti-virus for years, with automatic updates, and no previous problems with TB. Hmmm...

Okay, going through the suggestions from your link, but 1 problem... for the 3rd suggestion [Disable scanning of Thunderbird files and folders (by default McAfee is NOT supposed to scan them): Right click on systray icon; "On-Access Scan properties ..." etc], I'm afraid I don't know what is meant by "systray icon" and can't find anything with the words "On-Access Scan properties ..." . Not even sure if I'm supposed to be looking in McAfee or Thunderbird, but no luck either place. Even tried searching "what does the systray icon look like"... no results; guess this is very elementary; feel like a twit! I know I'm not a computer nerd, but I'm not a loser either, usually!  :) Thanks!

"On-Access Scan" is a generic term and may not be specific to McAfee. Basically you'll need to tell McAfee not to scan your Thunderbird profile folder.
Best would be to check with McAfee or ask in a McAfee forum.
