Why can't I reply to comments on reddit? I see javascript:void(0) in the lower left when I hover over the link to reply.

Certain functions of reddit are not working, including the ability to upvote/downvote and the 'save' and 'reply' buttons on comments. I'm seeing the message "javascript:void(0)" in the lower left corner on the non-functioning links, so I assume that is relevant. Functioning links show various long URLs instead.

I have already uninstalled firefox and reinstalled. I have cleared cache and cookies. I have reset to factory settings. I have updated Java. I have updated Windows. I have restarted my computer multiple times through those processes as well. I used to have the extension Reddit Enhancement Suite, but that was the first thing I removed, and nothing has resolved this issue for me.

Java and Javascript are not the same thing

  • JavaScript is an object-oriented scripting language that allows you to create dynamic HTML pages, allowing you to process input data and maintain data, usually within the browser.
  • Java is a programming language, core set of libraries, and virtual machine platform that allows you to create compiled programs that run on nearly every platform, without distribution of source code in its raw form or recompilation.

You can enter Safe Mode by the following:

  • Hold the SHIFT key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Firefox must be closed)

Your extension "V-bates" looks really suspicious. You should disable that. It's most likely adware.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

I haven't tried Safe Mode. How would I do that?

For what it's worth, this problem occurs in Chrome and IE as well, so any solutions that are specific to firefox may be missing the mark.

I noticed this while looking through my plugins, regarding Java. Since the message I keep seeing is about JavaScript, I'm wondering if this is relevant to the problem?

Chosen Solution

I don't know what V-Bates is, but it has been disabled. I can't uninstall it, however, at least not on the Firefox add-ons page.

I just started up in Safe Mode but the problem is persisting...

I will grab one of those programs and do some malware sweeps. I have the free version of AVG, would a full scan with that accomplish the same thing?

more options

You might be able to uninstall it from the Control Panel.

You should use all of the programs listed above as they will detect different types of malware. AVG scans for certain things only and sometimes come up with false positives. I don't know how AVG is now as I'm on Linux. But to answer your question, to my knowledge, AVG doesn't do the job that the other programs do.

more options

Okay. I'm running MalwareBytes Anti Malware now. I'll give them all a run.

Going to try to find V-bates in my programs list.

more options

Fixed it, thank you! I just ran all the 5 of those programs and they removed a couple things. Whatever they removed was causing the problem because it's working fine again. I'm going to keep that list handy from now on.

No problem! Glad you got that solved! :)
