My TB has stopped working. Win 8.1

more options

My OS is Win 8.1. My TB is 24.4. It worked fine yesterday 03-18-2014, but today it just runs and runs, no errors, no retrieval of email. I don't know what to look for or how to correct this extreme problem and have had to work with another email program that is not nearly as good as TB.

I have not added (as far as I know) any other program. There have been no notices of invasions to my OS.

I am not familiar with Win 8.1 protocols.

What does 'it just runs and runs' mean?

Thunderbird doesn't pickup mail. It never seems to connect. There are a few emails (per the Tab list) but I can't read any of them. I don't even know when they came in. There's a "doodad" on the opening Tab that just circles continuously, which usually means its downloading emails. However, nothing at all happens. I can read the address book.

Hello. Starting on 04/08/2014 the Thunderbird has stopped working in any way in my PC. I am running Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Before that day everything was ok and Thunderbird was working. I asked some friends using Windows 8 and they have the same problem. Thunderbird won't load the email accounts and won't send and receive any email. It won't even let us add a new email account. The message received when trying to add a new account is the following "Sorry - we're unable to communicate with our sign-up server. Please check your connection.". Also if we will try to move forward and add a new email account anyway the answer will be that Thunderbird can't connect to any server. We have uninstalled Thunderbird and install it again several times in the past days with no success. I was looking t delete the Thunderbird folder in Program files but I can't find it. The uninstall and install again procedure including deleting folder was a solution few years ago but it seams that now is not working anymore. I will really appreciate some help as my whole work is based on working with an email client and my work is stacked at the moment. I really don't know what other email client to use as the 2013 Outlook looks just terrible. Thank you very much

Check your firewall settings and make sure Thunderbird isn't blocked.

Thank you for answering.

The firewall was off. I just turned on the windows firewall and the same thing happen. I am running windows 8.1 Pro x64. Thunderbird is not on the list of the allowed or not allowed software through firewall and I can't find any option to add the Thunderbird to the list. I tried again to start Thunderbird and for Gmail is the same answer and for AOL will find the settings but after pressing the Done button the answer is "configuration could not be verified - is the user name and password wrong?" . The same emails I am trying to add to Thunderbird was working correct with Thunderbird till few days before and at this time is working well in browser and I am copy and paste the username and password so there is no mistake in typing or something like that. Thunderbird was just stopped working while using. I mean it was open in my PC, was working good for few hours in that day and at a time just stopped receiving or sending emails or connecting to any email server.

Thanks

I was more thinking of a personal firewall which may be bundled with your anti-virus software.

At this time there is no email account in my Thunderbird as I can't add any account and I used different ISP providers and the internet connection is good with any of them, the emails accounts will work in browser and has the IMAP configurations right as I checked and tried to add it in Outlook for example and will work. And as I said was working before with Thunderbird with the same settings. There are no special settings to add a a gmail or aol account as aol will work without any setting in the aol account and gmail will only need IMAP activated. So, the https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/problems-sending-and-receiving-messages won't help. Thank you

Thanks "christ1"

Using BitDefender windows 8 security and I just turned off the BitDefender firewall and the same thing happens. I also turned off the whole antivirus functions after and the same thing. I turned of bot windows firewall and BitDefender firewall or turned off the whole BitDefender and the same thing happens. I checked the BitDefender firewall and the Thunderbird has full access. Was working before with the same settings.

Thanks

I have seen two reasons for slowness this week, McAfee again and some blaming the latest round of Microsoft security updates. Apparently with 11 updates. It is reported that removing those fixes the problem.

Could you please remove your latest Microsoft security updates and see if that is the issue?

I usually not allow updates in my PC. I remember that I choose not to install Microsoft updates ever. I just checked the status and it is set up not to install Microsoft updates. I also checked the "update history" and is empty an the status is "you have not tried to install any updates on your computer". I really don't like Microsoft updates. Every time something is broken after updates. Also the "hidden updates" section is empty. I remember something that I did today some updates about the keyboard and mouse but that was today, I mean after Thunderbird to stop working. I will try to find an older version on Thunderbird and install it. Sometimes such move works. Thank you

Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

- Win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

- Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

- XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem go away?

Please do not open new threads for the same problem.

You're supposed to start Windows in safe mode.

I have started Windows in Safe mode with networking as Thunderbird has problems connecting to the servers and I need to connect to internet in order to test if Thunderbird has the same problem. But I will open windows in safe mode without networking too and try to open Thunderbird but as I said Thunderbird will open in the PC but it won't connect to any server. Thanks
