When you install Thunderbird, it should create its own shortcut on your desktop to start it up. Can you find that icon?

Firefox doesn't have a built-in way to start Thunderbird from inside the browser, but in the past I have read about add-ons which you could use so that you don't need to visit the desktop in between being in Firefox and opening Thunderbird.
