How to recover lost months of stored tabs and groups from picking "never remember history" and losing "last session."

I just lost previous months of tabs in 3 Tab Groups by selecting "never remember history." I was in horror when I opened the browser again and nothing was there. All that work.

Fished around and I created a new profile so any new changes won't be changing or overwriting any old data so I might be able to salvage it. It's still in the default profile and I'm using FF in the newly created one.

Please help me recover those lost tabs and tag groups? Thank you so much. I'm on WinXP so there is no Recovery Folder but I did see some things in App Data, tried to copy the whole folder from a profile in there, it had a lot of things but to no avail. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place. But it's doubtful. I still have my bookmarks and Bookmark Bar. But maybe I copied it over, but the tabs aren't coming up.

Chosen solution

Update, I unchecked 'use private session' option just now and it attempted to restart but it became 'not responding' but I am letting the program try to terminate itself. But at least its data is saved. Now to restore it without the browser crashing.

Thanks for your reply but you didn't read my question. I need to recover lost tabs. I am not asking *how* to have tabs saved. :)

I believe I have solved it with unclicking the "Always Use Private Mode" Check button.

If you are in Private Browsing mode then no data from that session is stored to disk so you won't be able to restore tabs from such a session. The same will happen in case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the history.

  • Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

Firefox will automatically try to restore the tabs and windows from the last session if a crash has occurred or Firefox didn't close properly the previous time.
If it didn't work the first time and the session crashes another time then you will get the "Well this is embarrassing" page (about:sessionrestore).
Set the Integer pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first start after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
