After upgrading to OS X Mavericks, leaving Firefox minimised for a short period of time results in being unable to browse any webpages, almost as if there is no network connection. However, other browsers (Safari and Chrome) work fine and renewing DHCP lease makes no difference.

Restarting Firefox resolves the issue, but it is extremely irritating! I have removed the application and reinstalled, then removed my profile but it is the same result. Everything was working fine before the upgrade - any ideas?

Other people have improved their Firefox performance after the Mavericks upgrade by resetting the NVRAM/PRAM described in this article:
