How do I remove Keybar 2.3

I have KeyBar2.3 appearing in my Firefox toolbar.

I am running WIN XP.

I cannot find KeyBar or any other unusual program in Add/Remove programs. I cannot find anything unusual in my Firefox Add Ons. I also cannot find anything on the web regarding any KeyBar version newer than v1.8 (and I'm usually a late adopter...did I mention that I am running XP?).

My anti-virus found "not.a.virus" (3 instances) and cleaned it, but after a reboot KeyBar was still there. It does not (and has not) appeared in my Explorer browser.

I then uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox, but kept my user settings so as to preserve my bookmarks, and KeyBar is still there.

Restarting Firefox in "safe mode" did not get rid of KeyBar.

The weird thing is I picked it up on a well-known website that tracks meteorological events. I clicked on a vid of a fireball, got a message to update a non-Microsoft video program (that I have set as my default), and knew immediately that I had done a bad thing.

Chosen solution

Hey, cor-el.

That worked! I reinstalled the search bar and was then able to remove KeyBar via Manage Search Engines.

As an aside, the only entry in the searchplugins folder was Safeguard-secure-search.xml

From everything I read about trying to get rid of KeyBar 1.8, I cannot believe that it was that simple. Perhaps this search engine was just residue from the cleaned not.a.virus

The silver lining in this is digging into functions of Firefox that I would otherwise never have touched.

Thanks to you and to Rodrigo for the response and suggestions.

Before I close this--for others who may have this issue--when I first got the virus there were three instances installed. My virus software caught two instances when they tried to install, but the third instance snuck through. So after my virus software had cleaned 2 instances, I still had to do a deep scan to find the rest of them.

hello FFBill, please try the following: 1. from menu bar: View - Toolbars - (Check if KeyBar appears there and) DIsable (by clicking on it) 2. from menu bar: Tools - Add-ons - (Check every section like Extensions, Plugins e.t.c) Remove it

Hey, RG.

Thanks for the fast response.

I failed to mention that I have done both of those things, both before and after reinstalling Firefox, but I just did them again.

The current enabled Extensions are:

AdBlocker Plus eSnipe (an EBay tool) fireform 0.7.4 (Firefox form filler) Microsoft .Net framework assistant 0.0.0 Troubleshooter 1.1a (provides Firefox data to Mozilla)

ThinkVantadge Password Manager and Zone Alarm engine are disabled due to incompatibility with this FF version.

PlugIns are: Adobe Acrobat DivX Web Player DivX Content Upload Plug In Java Development Toolkit 7.0.250.15 JAVA Platform 10.25.2.16 Microsoft DRM (Netscape Network Object) Microsoft DRM (Store Netscape PlugIn) NPCIG.dll (apparently for my camera, says it was updated in 2008) npFFApi (I have no idea what this is, says it was updated Jan 2012) Picassa Quick Time Shockwave Flash Shockwave Director Silverlight Windows Media Player Windows Presentation Foundation

There are no services.

Thanks,

Also, I just turned off the npFFApi and restarted Firefox. That did not fix the problem.

Sorry for the confusing list in the above reply, I had done them in a list but they posted as a continuous sentence.

Okay. I went to Customize Toolbar and dragged the KeyBar search window down into the box containing the available objects, and it is gone from my toolbar...but it still lurks in that collection of objects.

Also, I just noticed that it has a pull down, which lists various search engines (Bing, Wikipedia, Yahoo, Google, etc., in addition to KeyBar).

Can you remove this search engine via Manage Search Engines in that drop-down list?

Do you see this search engine in the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder?

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
