I go to "customize" and get the drop down window OK, but I get stuck here. When I hover the "grab hand" over the bookmarks button and click, nothing happens or the button turns into "new window." My bookmarks aren't visible so I can't drag them to the window to see what to do next. I'm not on full screen. I don't understand what I'm supposed to be doing once I get to this step. thank you.

Chosen solution

You can only place the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" on a toolbar in Customize mode.
You can drag bookmarks or a link on that toolbar (that toolbar shrinks to an icon in Customize mode).

Then you should be able to drag a link into that folder.
Bookmarks that appear on the toolbar need to be located in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file if the above didn't help.

Current Firefox versions require OS X 10.6 or later, so if you want to continue using Firefox beyond Firefox 16 then you need to update to OS X 10.6.8 or later.

Firefox 16.0.2 is the last version that works on an Intel Mac with the OS X 10.5 operating system.

Another option to consider is to install the last Firefox 10.0.x ESR version as that version is more recent than the Firefox 16.0.2 version.

I have followed all the steps and still stuck at the customize window. I drag bookmarks to the customize window, but when I click on it nothing happens. They don't show up as a list only as bookmarks. How can I move them around if they don't display individually? Thanks

I didn't get the customized process figured out, but the last link to manually organizing your bookmarks was a "piece of cake". Thanks!
