Greetings. Does anybody know how to change the location of the firefox 20.0.1 cache? I want to place it on a RamDrive but can't seem to find any information on this and the methods for other versions of FF do not work or are not applicable.

No, unfortunately, it does not, because firefox has changed it's cache structure. That is an old article and doesn't apply to the latest version of Firefox. Thanks though.

it still works as described for me in current firefox versions (20.0 & upwards) in windows 7 though.

edit: a restart of the browser will be necessary for the setting to take effect)

Make sure that the specified folder exist.
You also need to escape the backslashes (i.e. double them).

You can also try to delete the previously used cache folder as shown on the about:cache page.

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • do not clear Cache because Firefox will disable the disk cache in such a case

It's probably accurate, and the reference(s) probably helpful, but they look far too complicated just to find/change/fix my "I want to change the location of . . ." problem. I'll come back to it when (if ever) I have time, or when Firefox makes the question a simple "options" choice. Thanks for the advice though!

It is just a matter of a few steps:

  1. create a new folder that you want to use as parent folder for the cache, don't use an existing folder that has files
  2. create a new String pref browser.cache.disk.parent_directory and set the value to that new cache folder
  3. close and restart Firefox

If it best to remove the previously used cache folder with all files

name: browser.cache.disk.parent_directory value: C:\\Firefox\\cache

After revisiting the issue, it appears this does work. Sorry, I have received conflicting information and the article isn't very clear, to me, about the method in which to accomplish this, so I've simplified it. If you type about:config into the browser, like the article says to do, then right click somewhere in the field and select "new string", then name the new string "browser.cache.directory", without the quotation marks, and then click ok, then in the next box type the location you want the cache to be directed to, then click ok, it will in fact work. That's all you have to do. Thanks to all of you who already knew this but I was apparently too dense to listen to.
