makes a "tchopp" sound opening each new web page, started recently, Mac OS 10.8
Firefox version 19 for mac. I have tried disabling plug ins one by one: Java 7 update 17; Quicktime 7.7.1; Sharepoint 14.3.2; Shockwave flash 11.6.602.180- no help. The noise does not occur using Safari. I have also deleted and reinstalled Firefox, and resorting to an older version using Time machine. Nothing helps. The sound is loud enough to be heard in the next room! I can obviously mute the speakers but would rather have a silent firefox! Thank you

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
- You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
THANK YOU, very helpful- problem not present in safe mode. I then went to Help/ troubleshooting info/ reset firefox to its default state- this deleted my add ons ( but not the plug ins). I've reinstated "No squint" and "Theme font & size changer" (but not "Autofill") and, so far, no "tchopp" !! Will give further feedback once I've used the web for a few days. Thank you again.
Did you ever figure out which add-on it was?
I think it must have been "Autofill" as the sound has not recurred!
