I was told that, once I installed and used CHROME, it took over for most of any other browser's operation. I have removed CHROME as best I could, because of privacy concerns, but I notice in FIREFOX's about:config many references to CHROME. I would like to remove them. Is it advisable or safe? Or would I be better off un-installing FIREFOX and downloading a new copy of it??... and if so, how do I save my Bookmarks, etc.?? Best Regards, Bill Lindquist

hello bill, none of the entries in firefox/about:config that contain the term "chrome" are related to the chrome browser by google.

chrome is a general term that is used to refer to the user-interface of the browser (in contrast to the content - which is generally the information provided by websites). this reference was present in firefox long before the competing product with the same name came onto the market.

Actually, in firefox, "chrome" means the browser frame instead of google chrome. So you don't need to remove them.

I just want to delete Chrome. I have always used Firefox and like it. Now some tech installed it and while I use Firefox as my browser and it has all my bookmarks (hundreds of them) when I went to uninstall Chrome on my Windows 7 Professional program, it asks if I want to uninstall bookmarks. I am sure the tech imported the bookmarks but I cannot locate them to check. I cannot even get some kind of tool bar at the top of Chrome. I want my Firefox to handle all...including the online newspapers that I read...and Chrome has taken over them too. What do I do? I am quite frustrated and not a computer wiz kid. I can't afford to lose those bookmarks. Thanks!!

I have done research since I was hacked and my computer became a crumbling disaster that took me a month and a half to restore. Google could not even get me into my Google apps email or site. I was locked out for over a month. From what I heard Mozilla /Firefox was way more advanced and invented many computer apps and foundation structure of the browser in which Google and Microsoft take claim for. They know what they are doing and they know how to handle Google,Microsoft, and these fly by night search engines, and hackers. Google and Microsoft sold us out to cheap minuet made apps that they threw at us before testing it. Mozilla/ Firefox are the genius behind secure browsers and app development. Just trust them they know what they are doing.

If you no longer intend to use Google Chrome then you can uninstall that program.
You may first want to import personal data like bookmarks in Firefox from Google Chrome before doing this.

Make sure that Firefox is set correctly as the default browser if you want to open locally saved files in Firefox.

Furthermore I must add the day I got hacked it was very strange. Microsoft was sending me warning messages to get Window 10 that the browser which they claim was more secure then window 7. Also that day Norton sent me a email that my year contract was up 3 days ago that I had to renew it, that when I did they would restore Norton... I had Norton for 3 years. They did not give me a weeks grace which I thought was strange. Norton pulled out my computer started acting up and messages came on which read " 850,104 Error Norton Eraser" I looked up that error number and saw many people were having the same problem with the same Norton Error Code. So I could not get the computer stabilized. I decided to download Window 10. HP support was taken off when Microsoft downloaded 10. I also had Microsoft Essential Virus protection. My computer stabilized for about a hour. I went to check my emails in Google and Chrome wouldn't let me in until they took a camera shot of my files inside my computer. I felt a eerie feeling about Google and Microsoft and I thought that everything that took place within those 2 hours was way to strange By that mid afternoon my computer was no longer in my control. Hackers began taking over my browsers and blocked me from accessing my emails, by that evening I couldn't get in to any of my sites, emails or social sites. I was Hijacked. I do not know what virus or security protection to trust.

I do not know what is going on but we have major hackers at full attack.

I feel many are getting in through Google and Microsoft non tested experimental created over night programs, apps and horrid browser security. I do not trust them their only priority the last couple years seems to be promoting their products for us to buy. $$$$$

I have used Fire Fox off and on for a couple years and they have never tried to sell me a thing. I think I will listen to their advice I trusted the wrong ones.

Thanks to everyone! I just deleted Chrome and did not lose any bookmarks. I am very leery of all these new apps and gadgets for the computer and not a fan of Microsoft. We are being sold down the river in enough areas and I want my computer to be secure. I also got rid of my fancy virus protection and have installed the free version of Avast. It is great and yells at me if I click on an infected website...so funny! I live on a small island in the Caribbean and cannot afford to be hacked and so am VERY careful how I use my computer. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to help me. It is much appreciated. Someone should smack Microsoft good and hard!! NannyB
